Some Information for Senior Infants

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone is doing ok and I hope everyone is well – these are very troubling times for us all. I just wanted to touch base with you all and give you a few other ideas to help keep your daughter busy!

S.E.S.E. (an integrated approach to history, geography and science):

  • Weather Watch: Document the weather for 5 days in a row if possible. Ask your daughter to write and/or draw a picture of the weather each day and discuss.
  • Daily calendar: This something we do every morning in school. Ask your daughter to say the day, date, month, year and season.
  • Homes: On a walk in your area discuss the types of homes you can see. How many stories, windows etc do they have? Are they detached, semi-detached, a bungalow etc.?
  • Nature Walk: Go on a spring nature walk and talk about the trees, animals, flowers etc. you might see.
  • Experiment: Do a simple science experiments e.g. floating and sinking; (lots of science ideas online)

Other activities that can be done around the house which all aid your daughter’s learning include:

  • Design a new cover for a favourite book
  • Help at home – empty the dishwasher, set the table, put away clothes, match pairs of socks and count the pairs!
  • Cosmic Kids yoga on YouTube (we love this in my house!)
  • Dancing on gonoodle.com (it’s free but you may need to sign up)
  • Play with playdough
  • Do a jigsaw
  • Play ‘I Spy’
  • Do some cooking or baking
  • Sort toys by colour/shape and size or any other attributes
  • Practise cutting using scissors and sticking.

Keep practising the reading with your child. If they are finished reading what I gave home just encourage them to read any other material you have at home. Keep going over their letter sounds and names. Alphablocks on YouTube is a super resource to help with phonics. I the next week or so I will be sending home new Tricky Words for your daughter to start so keep going over all our previous Tricky Words. Encourage your daughter to write as much as she can!

Finally, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or worries about your daughter’s learning. I can be contacted by email on hoconnor@stkevinsgns.com.

It would also be great (if you have not already done so) to make sure you are signed up to Aladdin Connect.

Kind regards,

Helen O’Connnor
